Question:

Does it matter when you serve if your TOSS has spin on it?

My husband insists that it's a huge deal if you serve and the toss is spinning. I think it can't be THAT big a deal. I have tried to toss with no spin... it's hard. We are both 4.5 players.

  1. It doesn't really matter. i guess if it does it could possibly affect the power you put on it, but as long as it gets tossed high enough and has the right placement i don't see how spin on the toss could really affect it.

  2. I think your husband is talking about if you spin the ball, it wont be as consistent because when you hit it and it is spinning, you will work harder to make it spin another way or something. In my opinion, it doesnt matter too much though the pros might have something to say about that.

  3. I had one of the best serves in the state and I never put spin in the toss. You apply spin by the way you hit the ball with the racket.

  4. Like some people mentioned above, the only reason you don't want to put spin on the toss is for consistency.  If there is spin on it then you are most likely flicking your fingers and/or wrist to toss it up, which in most case is harder to control the trajectory and height.

If your current toss is controlled and consistent then it really doesn't matter.  That minuscule amount of spin you put on the ball will have no effect on it once you hit it. Hope this helps.

  5. Come on, you're 4.5, which means you're very good and experienced. At this level, I think it's whatever works for you, and who cares about somebody's else opinion.

I was taught to toss with no spin at all. But honestly speaking, I never gave it a thought why.

  6. No, it doesn't really matter if your toss has a little spin on it. If it goes naturally and if this is how you serve best, there is nothing to worry about. If you look at the pro players you will also see that some have a slight spin on their toss and others don't. It is completely up to you and what you FEEL works best for you.

  7. If you're a USTA level 4.5 then you should know how to put spin on your ball. Its true that spin is generated by how you hit it.  I have a killer spin on my serve, and I don't know how I toss that ball if it's spinning or not, but I just make sure the toss is in the right spot.  Look at the variety of Fed's serves, it comes purely from how he hits.

  8. the ball's probably just going to naturally spin because you can't help it.  it won't affect your toss that much.

  9. It's not =] it all depends what grip you use when you hold your racket and how you hit your serve and your position when you hit it.
