Question:

Does it matter which order acids are combined with bases?

We watched a safety video in my chemistry class last week, and they mentioned that you should add acids to water, not the other way around. Otherwise, the solution may boil. Does this apply to acids and bases? Is there a "safe" way to combine the two, or does it not matter?

  1. It's alphabetical.  Acid into Base A into B.  Otherwise there can be a very violent chemical reaction that can go beyond just "boiling"  In my lab at school there was a ring melted into the lab table from someone adding a base into an acid.
