  1. Not always.   Sometimes the downdrafts from the storms are not enough because the updrafts are stronger.

Not necessarily.  And this happens a lot here in the high plains, as well as the desert southwest of the U.S.  Sometimes the air in the lower part of the atmosphere is so dry that the rain that falls out of the storm evaporates before reaching the ground (This is called "virga"), thus thunder and lightning, but no rain, even though the storm passed right overhead

  4. No. It's quite normal, at sea for instance, where you can see a long way, to notice at night thunder and lightning in a cloud with no rainfall. It's just electric charges moving around with the convection inside the cloud.
