I traveled on a 4 hour trip taking my daughter to see my grandmother (who is disabled) for the very first time. I got caught in a traffic jam and was unable to console her for a whole whopping 25 minutes! She was crying so intensely she finally just passed out. I can hardly stand it! Have I caused her to distrust me and be fearful from now on?

  1. No, she's fine. My daughter have both had crying jags for 25 minutes or even longer, and they are fine. Once when my 9 year old was a baby, she was unconsolable and cried for over 4 hours straight, and she even ended up vomiting. I can guarantee you that she was totally fine after that. Well, after a bath and a nap! :)

Basbies have very short attention spans...they forget things like that almost as soon as it happens. Your baby knows you love her. If she cries it isn't going to cause her to distrust you.

Things like that are much harder on the parent. I think of all the times I cried because the baby cried...I remember it, and of course she doesn't!

  2. I doubt she's scared for life, but yes that can be very hard for the mom to deal with more so then them.

  3. as long as you were talking to her and singing to her and letting her know that you were there, it should be ok.  sometimes these things happen and we don't have much control over it.

it's when you leave a baby to cry alone that you do serious emotional damage.  it's people who intentially say "oh!  it's 8:00 pm.  i'm done parenting now." and leave the baby alone in a room to scream until the next day who do damage to their kids.

25 minutes of crying where mom is clearly there and trying to help isn't going to hurt a baby.

  4. When you get stuck in traffic like that there isn't much you can do. Shift the car into park, put the pacifier in her mouth, then just sing to her. If baby at least can hear you are still there it should help calm her a bit. Your baby will be fine though. It was a one time thing.
