My drive is steep but I would like to leave my new car on there rather than on the roadside.

  1. in addition to TJ29 might i add that it is illegal

to reverse off a driveway .

so should always back on and leave in forward gear

reversing up a hill is easier on the gearbox also

  2. no doubt whatever is holding your car has more work to do doesn't matter if it is the hand brake or the tranny

  3. I don't think so! the hand brake should help with that. Lack of

maintenance and repairs is what will do strain.

  4. The handbrake is meant to hold a car once stopped,   so be sure to set it each time to prevent the transmission from having to take all the strain.

  5. No strain on the car itself. Tt may cause a little tension on the handbrake cable, but to be honest that is something that can be ajusted for very little cost and shouldnt have any impact within a few years.

I would not worry about this and i would advise you to put your car in gear i.e 1st gear if facing bonnet down and reverse for the other way. this will protect your car and safety of others in the case of an accident or cable snapping.

  6. no i wont. the hand brake is ment to stop the car at speend so it wont damage it if its parked on a hill

  7. No you will be fine.

  8. It may do, it would be best once you hae switched off your engine to place the car in first gear as well, for a bit of extra support.

  9. Parking on a hill is simple nose up the hill leave it in 1st gear and the hand break. Nose down the hill reverse gear and handbrake. Another safety tip required by law is (it you are on a public highway) you turn the steering so "IF" the car starts to roll then it turns into the side of the road thus preventing an accident further down the slope.

  10. Use your emergency brake.

  11. Put it in reverse gear after you have put your handbrake on and switched off your engine. Please remember that you have done so though! The car should not move with this practice. A handbrake alone on a hill is a no-no

  12. possibly, leave the car in gear when parked and you should be fine.

  13. Hi - I do this, our driveway is quite steep. If you reverse the car up, put the handbrake on and leave the car in first gear.

Not only does this help, but if for some reason your hand brake fails, if the car is in gear, it shouldn't go anywhere.

  14. No but it may put a strain on your handbrake. Leave it in gear to prevent this.
