Does it really save electricity when you unplug appliances?

I was told that if you unplug your appliances (toaster, toaster oven, microwave, W/D, it can save on your electric bill. Is that true?

Also, does turning the lights off and on (off when you're leaving a room, then on each time you enter that room) use more electricity?

  2. I am not sure but I know leaving appliances plugged does use energy even when they are off so it would make sense that by unplugging them you would save on electricity.
