Does it really take six months for a cartilage piercing to heal?

Hey guys. =)

I got my upper ear cartilage pierced this afternoon and the sheet that the guy gave me with 'taking care of the piercing' instructions reads that it takes six months for the piercing to heal properly.

Naturally since he's the professional, I will try to go that long without changing it but I am curious.

How long was it before your healed properly?

Is it hard getting those kind of piercings out?

  1. yes, i left the same stud in mine for 8 months!!

  2. - Mine healed in a year, I know, long healing process but it's so cute!

-It's hard to take it out if it's in a captive bead ring, but if it's just in a regular stud, it should be easy enough.

  3. Cartilage piercings generally take closer 3 months to heal, though if you get it done with a gun it will take much longer. The 6 months heal time is probably including the surrounding cartilage that gets damaged when the needle is pushed through.

  4. It probably does. I removed mine after 3-4 months for ONE night and it closed up by the next morning. :(

I would think you could switch it out with another stainless steel one, but it's probably not worth the risk of it possibly getting infected.

  5. Yes.  6 months+.  It's not just skin that has to heal but the cartilage too and cartilage takes MUCH longer to heal.  Mine took about 10 months to heal completely.
