I dont understand the concept of just saying, I am going to just start cutting down trees on my property for the h**l of it or butchering the h**l out of shrubs, etc.

Is this the latest craze or what?

when and how did this trend start and why so you think?

Thanks for your answers!

btw, which area of the world are you?

  1. people today like very manicured clipped gardens and they enjoy controlling the garden by pruning. It represents their personality and lifestyles.

  2. much of it has to do with the gardening craze of a few years back... folks got into it, made big changes in their otherwise 'plain' yards, and planted stuff that they knew little about.... then they find that their pretty little tree by the house is now a twenty foot monster and eating the siding.... so they prune..... or the bushes by the front sidewalk have hidden the sidewalk, so they prune..... in most cases, removal is what needs done.... but they've invested a few years in growing these things and don't want to see them destroyed!... so they prune.....

and, there's  some kind of weirdness going on with young plants... folks put a new crepe myrtle in the yard and by that fall are asking how to prune it.... ????....it's all of four ft tall, just getting started, but they think they need to prune it for some reason.... 'shaping it'... or they see the ones that have been butchered by doofy groundskeepers and think that's what they should do to their new one!!???....

as for trees.... I see questions everywhere about tree roots above the soil.... they're in the way of my footpath... lifting my driveway... the tree drops fruit on my grass... the helicopters fall on my lawn.... no matter that the tree is an old old beauty that should have years left, it's bothering me and my stuff, so cut it down.....!!....I try hard to contain my ire, but sometimes.........

I'm in NC near Charlotte.... USA.. down South.......

  3. Here are some reasons/excuses.

Bad planning for placement of trees

No knowledge of care needed when planted

Thinking that trees/shrubs need as much water as flowers and want to conserve water

    Too much work to rake/trim

    Just don't know any better

I'm in No.Cal and we need permission to cut down some of our trees. The rest of them are going up in flames.

  4. hi , am in uk , with trades aligned to your subject .

And i agree ! - Was asked today to remove dead limbs from a very large sweet chestnut , where the wood peckers announce spring . Am fortunate to be able to argue that point , and hopefully change the client's mind .

It seems that generally folk see a scraggy mess of old hedge , whereas i see a stopping -off point for little birds .
