Simple enough. Does it snow in the actual city of Queenstown. I've seen a picture of the "Mall" draped in snow, but i'm now led to believe that it doesn't snow at all. Just up in the mountains (Remarkables, Coronet Peak etc ... ) I need to know if it snows in the city itself during

July.

  1. Put it this way, if it does snow in the town while you're there, all the locals will be out in the street going,"Whoo hoo!! Wow!! It's snowing!!" That should give you some indication of how accustomed they are to snow in the town.

Oh and by the way, Queenstown is no city by any stretch of the imagination. It's definitely a town.

    Cheers.   :)

  2. Not sure what these people are talking about but YES it does snow in Queenstown and it is the best place in the South Island to go skiing or snowboarding.  I think people tend to forget that they have opposing season which means it snows there during our summers (July, August, September).  I was just there in July and went snowboarding in Cardrona and the Remarkables which were both great.   The town of Queenstown is very small and the ski resorts are about 30 minutes away but it's a lot of fun there for the young and young at heart.  Better go soon because there is a lot of development and prices are going sky high.

  3. I have been in Queenstown when it has snowed.  It was about 8 years ago and it was an extremly unusual occurance as it was in April.  The locals said that they had more snow in those few days than they had, had the whole of the snow season the year before. There was not heaps of snow in the actual town, but it did snow although it melted very quickly in the actual town.  My kids were photographed by a photographer on Coronet Peak and made the Otago times newspaper.  We went on the shotover jet and they closed it down shortly afterwards as it was just so cold.  hanging onto the metal bar was just freezing.  They did open it up again for one special guest who had arrived in town in his own jet, so John Travolta got to ride.   My whole family loved Queenstown and N.Z. and would love to go back there.
