Our athletes winning medals at the Olympics in Beijing?

I know a lot of people are uncomfortable with China hosting it for their human rights record. I understand that, totally. But, we as a country didn`t choose who would hold this Olympics.

But, i still feel such a sense of pride, to see the Union Jack hoisted and how well we are doing in the medals table. This morning, we were No. 3 in the league table, despite being one of the smaller countries.

All views welcome, good or bad. :)

  1. I do hope you're not watching and enjoying these fascist Olympics Jo.

  2. I've not really been watching it but the husband has. It is nice to see Britain doing well for a change, even if the whole thing is a bit tainted.

  3. Makes me proud to be English! ! !

  4. Yes I am very proud, we are doing amazingly well!!

  5. There isn't a lot to be proud of in our country right now so, like you Joanne, I feel a great sense of pride for our hard working athletes.  To be third in the medals list is amazing and we should give all the athletes a warm welcome home when they get back.  The location of the Olympics and the politics of the Chinese government really shouldn't be allowed to tarnish what really is an incredible achievement.

  6. I've been following it and I am really proud of the athletes. It makes me mad to then see the British press ripping them apart.

  7. I am very proud and have yet to get through a medal ceremony without blubbing.

Hope they all stay fit for 2012 because most of them are only young so should be competing then as well.

( have been looking at rowing machines in Argos Catalogue..)

EDIT-Well as neither of us are far the coast we have no excuse do we really? I expect you to report back on the ..er..scenery :-)

  8. Yeah it's great! I've really enjoyed watching the games this year. It reminds you that there's still a lot good things happening in our country, and the hardwork and dedication of the athletes is inspiring. We rock!!

  9. i am totally against the olympics being held in china and  i was holding my own boycott.

but my husband didnt have the same opinion and i gave in due to the fact it was on  tv whether i approved or not.  but  im overjoyed with our winners. the british team has done so well. i am convinced that we will stay up in 3rd place. which is excellent and i'm also convinced that we will excel ourselves in 2012.  well done  great britain

  10. Jo I agree they are doing fantastic!

  11. I love to see team GB winning all those medals.  Our athletes deserve our support too.

Most of them are from ordinary backgrounds, have families who have made real sacrifices to assist them in their achievements and the athletes themselves work so hard, from an early age, to become the very best at what they do.

I feel immense pride when I see any of the youth of this country doing great things,  Winning gold at the Olympic Games is the ultimate achievement.

You are right when you say that there is no choice as to which country the Olympics are held.

I would be the first to join any protest about human rights, but our athletes should not be used as pawns in political protest.  They are there for one thing only.  To meet with athletes from around the world and compete at the highest level.

All too often the world is focused on terrible happenings. This is one occasion for the people of the world to come together, whether watching or taking part, in a celebration of accomplishment and harmony.

  12. I must admit although I'm not a sporty person . It does make me feel proud to be British. Its about time we won something we work hard enough at the sports

  13. Yes it does, and to be fair I feel proud of other competitors too, when Shelly-Ann Fraser won the 100metres I felt the same for her and Jamaica. Walking home this afternoon I noticed some lads, who I know to be a bit loud and thuggish at times, outside the bar quite subdued with pride, chatting about GB's achievements, they were actually in good humour, I've never seen them less threatening, it appears to have an effect on them too.

  14. you bet ye I am.

  15. Personally, I don't give a hoot about the human rights issues. ALL countries have these issues including the UK and most certainly the USA. It's just that we don't hear of them. And YES it gives me great pride that we atr 3rd in the medal table. COME ON BRITAIN!!!!!

  16. I absolutely do!  If I thought not enjoying it would change China's record on human rights, I'd try not to.  But I believe that the more exposure China has to the rest of the world, the sooner they will open up their eyes to the problems created by suppression of a particular group.  I believe they have also given themselves a couple of black eyes, what with the pretended ages of their gymnastic team and the sad story of the girl singer.  The government at least will be aware that they haven't fooled anyone and they made themselves look stupid.  Maybe next time they'll think before trying to lie to everyone.
