I just got my Associate in Accounting but my goal is to get my CPA. I live in Texas. When I look at the % of people that actually pass the CPA exam I get discourage. I don't consider my self a smart person, but this is my dream. I'm not young, I'm 35 but with all I'm trying to do I feel older. I need to do it because is my only way to support my 3kids. I'm a single parent and I need to have a good source of income to be able to make it on my own. I struggle to get my associate, and I still have a long way to go. How can I get ready, starting now , to take my CPA exam? My GPA is a 3.5, I work a full time job. I need some encouragement, please help. Or should I just settle for a bachelor degree and an o.k pay?

  1. It takes hard work and an ability to understand the material. You should also enjoy it.

I studied hard for the exam while working full time (but not a mother) and it was hard, hard work. It was worth it though.

You will probably need more hours in accounting than what you have with the associate. I think you need 27 hours in accounting, and some states require more total credit hours of education in general before being eligible to sit for the exam.

Check the link below for eligibility requirements for your state.

  2. Never settle!!  Special? Yes, in the sense that it takes hard work and dedication.  It will take hours of study and preparation.  You should take a CPA review course.  Your college should offer CPA reviews as part of its course offerings.  If you work fulll-time, raise three kids, and attend college.  You ARE SPECIAL. In 30 years of teching adult students are motivated and succeed.  If nothing else, the must prove they are smarter and obtain better grades than their kids.
