  1. Verona is a great place to stay. The old town is quite extensive - there's a old Roman Colosseum (the Arena) that's still used for opera and concerts through the summer, a Roman theater, lots of old churches, the castle (which often has interesting exhibits), the houses of Romeo and Juliet, Juliet's tomb (yes, they're fictional - these are at least representative of the period though), Piazza dell'Erbe with painted buildings, the tombs of the Scaligers (the old rulers), and some very good restaurants.

There are often interesting events going on in Verona. A couple of months ago there was a classic car rally that started and ended in Piazza Bra. Right now there's a huge show of Preseppi (nativity scenes) from around the world in the Arena. Verona hosts a big horse show and wine trade show.

I use the venere.com site to locate hotels in Italy. They have a large database. You can use a map to sort for a particular district in the city you're interested in and then sort by price, guest rating,... http://en.venere.com/italy/. The site has a lot of reviews by previous guests to get an idea of what to expect from the area, the hotel, and the staff. I would highly recommend the Hotel Verona http://en.venere.com/hotels_verona/citta... It's a block and a half from the old town and a 10 minute walk to the train station. Very reasonably priced and they have free wireless internet which is rare here. I stayed there overnight a few weeks ago to catch an early plane out of Verona and was very impressed. They even opened the breakfast room an hour early when I needed to leave and offered me coffee and brioche.

  2. Verona is certainly worth a stay, and probably of more than one night.  It has a lot of interesting things--a Roman arena, a neat market area, lots of old churches, and the Scalinger Castle or Palace that's fun to wander around in.

In addition, you can visit a lot of other interesting places in Northern Italy from there--Trento, Vicenza, Padua, Mantua--to name a few.  I'd stay at least three nights there--look at the city for one day, then get on the train and see Vicenza and Padua.
