  1. ALEX YOU REALLY NEED TO GET A CLUE, YOU UFC NUTRIDER.

There thats out of my system. the fact is that karate if taught righ can be avery effective Martial Art. contrary to Alex's screwed opinion, Okinawin karate teches many standing grappling moves, as well as clinch fighting. It's just unfortunate people are too stupid to do research for themselves and have to put something down even though they don't know.

Karate kicks are every bit as effetive as Muay Thai, in fact, most Okinawin styles do not kick above the waist.

the truth is that how effective whatever style of karate is will be determined by how good your instructor is and how well you train it.

  2. any system that trains you to keep thinking and react to certain situations "works". some systems work better in some situations that others--for example you might not want to go straight to the ground if you are facing multiple opponets in a street fight. and stand up fighting is not the best thing in a situation that allows take downs and wrestling.

short answer yes, but only if you practice for real world situations.

  3. yes

  4. It would not have been around for as long as it has if it did not work.

  5. Yes, but not as well as some other martial arts... Karate is mainly a punching and kicking style.  It is very limited from the  clinch or on the ground.  In terms of punching, it is not as good as boxing, and in terms of kicks, it is not as good as muay thai.  (let the thumbs-downing from karate masters commence...)

However, any training is better than no training when it comes to self-defense.  Karate will give you very powerful punches and kicks, and traditional training will instill a lot of toughness in you.

  6. )Karate(do)- A martial art that originated on Okinawa, then was adopted by Japanese during the occupation. There are three main schools of karate, from which all the other karate styles brunch out.

-Shotokan- probably the most widely practiced style of karate, which was found by Funakoshi, school focuses on speed and precision of techniques rather than on raw force of a fighter. Bulk of training is kata(forms consisting of movements), drills and sparring.

-Goju ryu- Hardcore school of karate, fighters rely heavily on their physical ability to block and take punches, therefore training consists of brutal endurance exercises, and drills mixed with kata, with full contact sparring introduced later in the menu. Goju ryu karate-ka have always been famous for their endurance, strength and overall toughness.

-Shorin ryu- a mix of the two above, plus a arsenal of evasion techniques is introduced, fighter don’t tend to stand their ground and fight, but evade and counter. Some people say it’s the most balanced and rational style of karate.

There is one thing you must understand about karate. There is a big difference between karate and karate-do. When you enroll in a karate school you are going to be doing a lot of free sparring. Karate school are oriented on tournaments and fun. Karate-do schools on the other hand are places where you really learn how to fight, you learn self defense, you get some bare knuckle sparring and get to know the karate way of life. So, you have to choose between fun, competition and learning to defend yourself.

  7. Hi there

    It sure does!

Despite what the speedo brigade would have you believe.

If you get panned in a real life situation the arts not to blame for your mistakes.

    ;-)

    Best wishes

    idai

  8. sure karate works, it amazes me to hear people say there are no throws and ground fighting in karate, they must have not studied karate before, do not believe what you see on tv,  i have studied many martial arts styles and found that most teach throws and ground fighting, i prefer kungfu myself, wish i had more time with this,  karate is not what you see on tv, it does not take much beat a wrestler  one basic karate move  is all it takes, but we are talking about real techniques the worst thin

  9. that's a very vague question. karate "works" for lots of things.

what do you want it for? self defense? sport? confidenc/self esteem? etc etc.

any art can be good, it is more important 'how' you train, than 'what' you train. the art is only as good as the person using it. so don't get caught up in the "my style is better than your style" argument. and don't listen to those "modern" guys who say traditional arts don't work. just trust yourself and your experience. find something you like, and stick with it, and get a good teacher.

i will say though that if self defense/sport is your goal..ie "fighting"...then a traditional art will take you longer to learn and achieve the results you want, because they are more wholistic in their approach. they train your mind, body and spirit together simultaneously. where some modern arts such as kickboxing, jeet kune do, mma, military combatives and some eclectic styles of jujutsu...etc etc...get right down to the nitty gritty and teach you how to fight right away.

so largely it depends on what you want out of your training.

  10. yes! especially freestyle katate styles which teach stand up,ground/grappling,weapons and practicle street wise self defence.

  11. does a kick to the knee hurt?

  12. Good karate works. Period.

  13. It's all about appearances.MUAY THAI seems to have more powerful and effective kicks but I will go one on one with anyone throwing muay thai thigh kicks versus my stomp side kick or stomp heel kick to the same area .There is a reason those kicks are not allowed in competition which for most people creates the false impression of effectiveness.By effective I mean it only has to work the 1st time everytime.

To the body I will give the nod to the muay thai shin kick over using the foot. To the head karate fighters have been knocking out people long before muay thai became the flavor of the month.

It is up to you to develope "what works".In sport you need many techniques to counter an equally trained opponent for self defense you need only a few plus common sense and awareness of your surroundings and the people in it.

and I didn't thumb you down alex if that is the impression you have of karate by the dojo in your area then there aren't any good instructors in your area

  14. definately
