  1. Yes. Bilateral renal failure if untreated keeps  the body acidotic.

Yup, the kidneys provide the strongest influence on the body's pH levels due to their excretion of H+ and formation of bicarbonate (HCO3).  If the kidneys fail, then the H+ in your body will build up, and what's worse is that no HCO3 is being formed to act as a buffer to counteract the rise H+ levels.

    For a short term fix, your body will start increasing its rate of breathing, but that can't be maintained.
