  1. Yes, it's a commonly occurring amoeba found in nearly all warm bodies of fresh water in the Southern U.S. (and elsewhere around the world).  It's always been there, and it will continue to be there.  It thrives in warmer conditions, so late summer when the water is the lowest and warmest the amoeba's levels are highest.  That said, infection is still really rare and the only way to contract it is through the nasal passage.  You can't get it by drinking the water or anything like that.  You have to actually snort the water up your nose.  If you're worried about it, save stuff like somersaults for chlorinated pools, and always plug your nose when you are jumping into the water. And you can always wear a nose plug as well.

"Although the infections are severe, the risk of Naegleria fowleri infection is very low. There have been 33 reported infections in the U.S. during the 10 years from 1998 to 2007, despite millions of recreational water exposures each year. By comparison, during the ten years from 1996 to 2005, there were over 36,000 drowning deaths in the U.S."

  2. Several weeks ago the amoeba grew to gargantuan size.  A passing englishman remarked that it looked to be 500 stone or more.  We had no idea what he meant so we made fun of his accent.

The amoeba eventually made its way out of the lake.  A fierce battle was waged.  Local law enforcement were powerless to stop it's amoeba-like rage.  Many fell.  Few were spared.  Great anguish was visited upon the city of Austin by the giant amoeba.

Just when things seemed most dark.  When the city seemed doomed.  The Ninjas and Pirates, who have long been fighting for supremacy of Austin, put aside their differences temporarily and banded together.

Copious was the suffering and violence as wave after wave of Ninja and Pirate attacks crashed against the giant amoeba.  Somebody put on the soundtrack to Top Gun.  With inspirational music backing them they were able to slay the amoeba and save the city.

    Austin was safe again....for now.

  3. I have not seen anything in the news about it for a while now. I am guessing not.
