Before filtering tap water with the Brita pitcher, I let it stand in an open jar for up to 9 hours. Will this water contain much less chlorine after 9 hours compared to fresh water from the tap?

  1. Yes, the answer is really a few hours. But 9 would allow you to be sure. Bringing the tap water to a boil and bringing it back to room temp should allow the faster release of chlorine.

  2. Chlorine does not evaporate from water but is readily dispatched by expo sire to ultra violet light and the sun has plenty of them for the taking.

Put your water in a clear glass jar with lid and set in the direct sun for about an hour and that should be that.  If you want to verify this get a pool chemical test kit and test before and after.  Most water systems use chlorine but in 0.5ppm or less to sanitize the water.

    You're welcome!!
