Does light change the water in a fish tank? not looks wise but like does it create algae?

i heard that any type of light put ontop of a fish tank to show light in the fish tank create algae. just wanted to know if light really does effect water

  1. Algae needs light to grow, so the short answer is yes.


  2. Yes, it does. And it also effects the temperatur of the water!

  3. Yes any type of light will allow algae to grow, however even low light can cause a brown type of algae to grow. It is best to leave the lights on the tank for up to 8 hours maximum, and 10 hours for tanks with live plants. Most tanks with live plants require more lighting, and algae will not usually thrive if plants are well cared for. Lighting can also increase the temperature in the tank.

  5. Yes. We just started a saltwater tank a month ago and the pet store told us to only keep the lights on for 4-6 hours a day for the first month or two. This is suppose to help limit the algae growth until we can establish some creatures in there that can take care of the algae.
