  1. I live in Washington DC, two blocks from a 20-some acre park.  I take the bus or metro to work or walk (3 miles) when the weather and time permit.  I often go a week without using my car.  In my spare time I go to plays or see concerts, row, go to museums, take pottery classes, go out to eat, etc.  I'm outside alot.  I think more than suburbanites who spend all their time commuting and stuck in traffic in their cars.  I'm in a one bedroom apt but just put a contract on a 90 year old row house.  Living in a small space has made me LESS of a consumer, since everything has to serve more than one purpose in order to be worth the space it takes up.
