Question:

Does looking at a computer screen too long permanently damage your eyes.?

I find it very hard to read using a computer screen, but its the most efficient way to read all the literature I have to get through.

My eyes get sore and teary after a while (30mins). Every 15 or so I stare at the spot furthest away from me for about a minute to exercise them (I heard this helps) and it does make them feel better. But am I doing any permanent damage?

  1. No but you may need glasses. The older computer screens emitted low level radiation that required you to limit your time on them. Have an eye exam to check your health and be sure to tell them you work on a screen a lot.

  2. change computer screen with a better one! LCD

  3. Your eyes adjust to looking at small distances , so you might lose some of the sharpness of your long distance sight.

  4. It shouldn't. Sounds like you may need to have an eye exam

  5. hope not and i doubt it because although bill gates wears glasses, he aint blinde lol

and i've been using my computer half my life and i wear no glasses...its fineeeee dont worry about it~~

  6. I believe it does. That's y I use special glasses when I use the computer and eventually I don't get any headaches.

  7. yes

  8. Yes it does damage your eyes, I am now slightly short sighted after 10 years of working on computers. You're doing the right thing though, you shoudl rest your eyes for a minute at least once an hour.

  9. it strains your eyes and makes them work harder too see

  10. Yes and no on permanently damaging the eyes. What it does is looking at any one object for too long puts a strain on the eyes causes the muscles in the eyes to weekened. Because your looking at an object or screen for a certain period you are not using other muscles to focus to other areas such as something far away. Over time your eye muscles become week because you are not at things that are a distance away so therefore are over using the muscles in the eye for close range and those muscles become strained and eventually you will need glasses to help with the over use of those muscles.Try purchasing a screen filter, it seems to help me, it is good that you are looking away to give your eyes a rest.

So it is not the computer itself but the action of looking at something close. I work on a computer 8-10 hours a day doing finance, and when I went to the doctor that is what he told me. He said try looking  away from the computer every hour at things far away to exercise the eye. This will help the muscle from getting strained and weakened.

  11. Eyes need exercise.  Staring at one localized are for a long time gives them no exercise.  Another issue is how close your screen is.  Opthamologists speculate that concentration on viewing things which are too close causes near-sightedness.  I think the sore and teary results from an overly intense display.  Use the monitor adjust buttons to mellow it a bit.  I assume you meant every 15 "minutes" - your eyes need to focus far away for a while but they also need up/down and side to side movement.  Just staring at something far away is still letting most of the eye muscles do nothing.

  12. no it doesn't.  Even you are experiencing sore-eyes, i suggest you lighten down the screen light. I change my screen brightness to medium and  i used computer approximately 10 hours a day without any problem. i dont wear glasses too.
