Since the 2 answers are opposing views, I'll be the tie breaker:

Yes, it most definitely helps in the preparation process. I'm talking primarily about people skills, communication skills, and problem solving skills.  Learning how to communicate effectively, interact/get along well with people at all levels are most valuable skills to have these days.  Having these skills does not necessarily guarantee success, but they will get you at least half way there, the rest depends on your job performance, etc.
