  1. It is rare, generally the mental ilness are about the conduct, but when it requires a surgery is because the ilness is neurodegenerative

    I was not aware of anyone still doing lobotomies. Terrible procedure.  Intent was to "reduce the patient to the level of a household pet" according to the man who came up with the procedure.  I have only seen one lobotomy patient, and that is a pretty good description.  

    There is a lot of research with deep brain stimulation in severe cases. Being done occasionally, but certainly not a common procedure.

  3. Mental illness hardly ever requires surgery.  It is usually treated with drugs and psychotherapy (counselling).  

    Surgical treatment requires something to operate on.  In many cases, we don't know enough about the brain to perform a successful surgery.

  4. lobotomies are still performed (just a few times a year) for those with uncontrollable OCD.

  5. Brain tumor removal and ECT.
