  1. Nice answer KarinC. I agree about Merv's pulling Cobalt Blue being the classy thing to do. I know he cares deeply about his horses, so it was great to see another owner putting the HORSE first and their needs and "wants" secondary.

BTW... Stevie Wonderboy (his last year's Derby hope) is back in training. Can't wait to see him hit the track again. Timing is great too... he will run on poly track.

  2. No.  They had contender Cobalt Blue, but after a poor prep race and some less-than-sterling workouts leading up to the Derby, they decided early in the week to bag out.  Trainer and owner made the decision early in the week, knowing that by doing that they let Teuflesberg, who was in the 21 spot, get into the race.  In my book these are classy people-- Merv Griffen certainly cannot count on having another possible Derby horse, and he could have opted to go for the thrill and let the horse take his chance, just to have a horse in the Derby.  Instead he's being thoughtful, letting someone who has a genuine chance in, and giving the horse a chance to re-group and get himself together for races later on.  A classy sportsman.  Wish there were more like him.
