    Pure methane is an odorless, colorless gas. When released by animals it is mixed with various molecules (usually containing sulfur) that produce a scent.

    If you have a room full of methane and oxygen it will remain a room full of methane and oxygen.   It will stay that way forever, or unless something (a match perhaps) provides sufficient activation energy.

    But at room temperature methane does not spontaneously react with oxygen.
