  1. many studies have proven that money is only a short-term motivator. to me, it's like asking if money buys happiness-i would say no, but no money can bring a lot of unhappiness. motivation comes from within an individual. given a reasonable wage,  will not work harder or better or become smarter if given a higer wage.

    however, underpaid workers can become resentful and bitter and lose any natural motivation they posess.

    Others being growth prospects, learning opportunities, exposure  opportunities.

What motivates an employee depends on his or her  value system.  I think that mutual respect in the workplace can motivate almost any employee.  Micromanagement, however, destroys initiative.  If someone is not allowed to use their own judgment in how they conduct their own jobs, pretty soon they wont.
