Suppose, Mr.X travels on a bike with 27km/L mileage from a A to B and uses only a litre of fuel

Now suppose, Mr.X and Mrs.Y travels on the bike the same distance. Does this mean more fuel is burned due to Y's load?

  1. yes it puts more wait on the car there for it uses more gas

  2. yes,

  3. The amount of fuel consumed by an engine is basically the function of the amount of air sucked in.

In order to answer your query it is necessary to make following assumptions

    1. The road conditions are identical in two trials ( this assumption is valid as Mr.X and Mrs. Y will be travelling from the same point A to B).

    2. The vehicle is driven at a steady speed of 60 Km/hr ( just a number this could be any sped for that matter but constant).

Now if the vehicle is to be driven with only one passenger at 60Kmph , engine will have to generate some amount of torque say Y to support the speed of 60KMPh. But with two people sitting on a same bike in order to move the vehicle at a same speed the engine will have generate the torque Z instead of Y where Z>Y.

The only way for driver to effectuate the increase in the engine torque ( basically to maintain the vehicle speed) is  by admitting more air into an engine by using accelerator pedal. As soon as more air is admitted , proportionally ( Lambda=1) more  amount fuel also gets admitted into  an engine cylinder , resulting into combustion of air fuel mixture generating more thermochemical energy ( torque) and the vehicle speed is maintained to 60 Kmph even with two passengers.

This is the reason why vehicle will indeed burn more fuel on identical road conditions with same driving cycle when the pay load is increased.

  4. Yes, it takes more power to move more weight. Therefore it would require more fuel to move that extra weight.

  5. yes, but not as much fuel as would be used if they both took their own vehicles...

  6. yes offcourse coz engine need more power to push the vehicle which requires more fuel

  7. load on vehicle mke more fuel using..
