  1. Learning to play an instrument and being exposed to classical music does indeed improve cognitive functioning in lots of ways.  For some reason, vocal music doesn't necessarily have the same effect -- different area of the brain, I suppose.  I don't know about social skills per se, but it can give you opportunities to share social situations in which you can learn and improve social skills, yes.

    if that was true, the musucians would be wonderful  linguists
