  1. You could expect a more authoritative answer if you stated which GPS you had and your expectation of "working".   Any GPS can get a position fix anywhere on the earth.  So if you're expecting to be able to mark a position and navigate back to it, see your track log, etc., follow the arrow to geocaches, etc.  you're probably fine.   Very few GPSes have detailed maps of the entire planet, however.  So if you're expecting detailed maps and turn-by-turn directions from your $150 handheld while on a different continent (you didn't say what country your GPS is currently in, either...) be prepared to have at best rudimentary basemaps and at worst, no maps at all.
