Does my RCA "HDMI" DVD player support HD DVDs?

The model number is DRC279A http://support.rcaaudiovideo.com/manual.aspx?product=66

I have tried researching this but am not finding anything useful. I tried using a HD DVD in it last night, but after spinning and "thinking" for a minute, it said, "no disc". I have a HDMI cable that is connected from my player to my HD TV.

This whole blu-ray / HD subject is so confusing!

  1. to play dvd HD-dvd (which is being discontinued soon anyway so DONT buy one) or blu ray requires separate players. your dvd player has the ability to upscale dvds to hd resolution so they look better. but it wont play HD-dvds or blu ray discs. Since upscaling dvd payers do work pretty well i would recommend waiting to get an HD disc player (blu ray or HD dvd) because they could get cheaper then.

  2. Nope, it doesn't. A HDMI DVD player just upscales a normal DVD output to HD-ish quality. For an HD-DVD you'd need an actual HD-DVD player.

  3. No it will not!   You will only be able to view Standard DVDs NOT  HD-DVD or Blu-Ray DVDs. This unit probably simply "upconverts" normal or standard DVDs (480) to the High definition format 1080 via HDMI port. It is not true High Definition but it does enhance the picture quality.
