Question:

Does my Ragdoll kitten still need to be bottle fed?

I have a Ragdoll kitten, Harley, who is about 10/11 weeks old. I have had him for a couple of weeks now. I read other articles but am still unsure of what to do. Either in bed or when laying on the couch he will either nuzzle his head, trying to get underneath me and/or almost head butt me then begin to suck/l**k. I'm assuming this means he was weaned too early but should I buy supplemental cat milk and offer him a bottle a couple times a day? He does eat solid food and has no issues with it...I just feel bad and don't want him to be needing something. Any ideas? Thanks!

  1. when kittens are born they drink milk from their mothers, it is instinct for the cat to knead the mothers b*****s to make the milk flow smoothly from the duct on the nipple.

When they do this when they are older it is because they are comfortable and find it relaxing, its a way of showing that they care about you and love you like as if you were his mother.

  2. He's old enough to eat solid food now without the bottle feeding.

  3. My kitten was taken from his mother too early, and he used to knead me all day, for the first couple of weeks I had him. Old habits die hard. Kittens are usually weaned around 6 weeks, so if your kitten is otherwise healthy and is eating, there's no need for a bottle.

  4. Good grief no!  Kittens stop nursing by 6-7 weeks of age.  He's suckling as a comforting gesture, some adult cats do it out of habit.  Keep him on his solid food, he doesn't need any milk or formula or anything else.

  5. If he is eating solid food on his own, leave him to it...he will be fine. Cats will nuzzle well into their adult lives.

Good luck with your new kitten!!

  6. He's fine. Some cats will nuzzle and try to suckle their whole lives.

  7. no he should be fine by now all kittens do that when there weaned. Its normal
