He is 3 weeks old all he has done all day is cry! Even after he has his feeds and nappy changed he still cries and just will not settle down.

I read that this could be a sign of something called Colic?

What is Colic and how do i help my son? It is 8:30pm where i live so i can not get any kind of Medication for him tonight. Is it likely he has Colic and what do i do about it?

  1. Buy something called 'Gripe water' and see if that helps.  It should...  Could well be colic or trapped wind. Best to see your health care professional!

To calm your baby, I'd swaddle him, keep him close and hold him in different positions eg, rock him back and forth while holding him upright on your knee, lie him on his back and slowly push his legs up to his tummy, anything to get his bowels moving!

Check his temperature too, in case there is something a little more troubling going on you are un aware of!

  2. my son went through crying spells from 6-8 weeks where i thought he had colic, but it turned out to be a growth spurt.

my pediatrician described it to me as being:

inconsolable crying that lasts at least 3 hours a day, 3 times a week for at least three weeks.

  3. There are medicines for colic in the general pharmacy - I would check with the doctors as this is often misdiagnosed.  My son didnt have it but a friends son did and they said it started always around 8 to 9 pm.  If your son has it it usually only lasts a few months.  Make sure your baby is winded properly.

  4. Does he pull up his knees whilst crying? Does he not burp easily when he has finished feeding? If the answer is yes he could have colic...you need to ask your healthcare provider about it..there are LOADS of ways to fix it...but first you must eliminate other possibilities. Good luck.

  5. If he is in pain (as he would be with colic), he would be bringing his knees up and giving a hard painful sounding cry.  If this is the case, boil some water and let it cool until it's luke warm, then let him have a drink.  He could be just thirsty (milk doesn't always quench thirst) or if he does have colic, the warm water may help to bring the wind up.  Gently pat and rub his back while holding him over your shoulder to help things along.

Once the chemist is open again, you may want to go get some advice.

Good luck and I hope he settles soon.
