Question:

Does my baby sleep longer at night because he gets 1/2 formula?

At night we mix breast milk with 1/2 formula to stretch the milk out since I only pump once. He sleeps 3 -4 hours at a time at night. During the day, he gets only milk. He will go 1 1/2 to 3 hours the most without eating. If he gets any formula during the day, he seems to go a little longer. Does formula stay with them longer?

  1. Formula is digested slower than breast milk. if you are giving formula your baby may be fuller and therefore causing him to sleep longer.

  2. Great question, I would think that the formula is harder to process than the obviously natural breast milk. The "keep" times on them are different which was the first thing to make me suspicious of all that was in them. But honestly, I don't know, I just know that it did last longer.

  3. Formula is harder for them to digest so it does stay in their system longer just because of that.

  4. Yes- formula is heavier thus stays with the babies longer. We see it all the time at the center. Breast milk bottles are used every 2 to 3 hours while formula bottles hold them for 4 or 5 hours

  5. yes, formula takes longer to digest so he stays satisfied longer, breastmilk is broken down and passed much quicker
