my parakeet laid an egg 12 days ago and laid one every other day untill there were 5. She is still sitting on all of them. The male bird is often in the nesting box and i hear a lot of kissing and noise in there. Sometimes when i peek in they are laying next to eachother. I have seen hime feed her a lot and she hardly comes out. If they were infertile would she have stopped sitting on them by now? Can the 3rd or 4th have been fertilized but not the first?Should i candle the eggs for the 3rd time? Thanks! And i have read a lot about birds and i know all about how they may become egg bound and how to care for baby birds and everyhting!

  1. I've heard of birds incubating unfertilized or even dead eggs, but this is usually not the case.  If the male and female have mated, and are caring for the eggs.  There's an excellent chance that the eggs are viable and alive.  Instead of candling them, I'd recommend letting the parents take care of them.
