I live in IL.

Where can I find my states laws regarding this practice?

  1. If you signed an agreement to a finance charge when you registered as a patient, yes.  Even if not, probably yes.  The only exception would be exceptional interest, possibly defined in IL as "usury" or "usurious interest."

If in doubt, contact your state's Attorney General's office.  Keep in mind that the doctor could also sue you if you don't pay within a "reasonable time,"  unless you have made payment arrangements.

BTW, you don't need a "lender's license" to charge interest on a bill.  This isn't a "loan."  Even if it were, anyone can loan money with a promissory note.

  2. only if they have a lending license
