my dog bobby has been coughing really badly for the past few months so we took him to the vets, the vet said that his heart has enlarged and is pressing down on his windpipe mking him cough and coking.

We have all been spoiling him now because hes not the same anymore, but do you think he could get better or not?

  1. The vets are right Bobby heart must be enlarged and when it is plumping it is hitting againset him windpipes which is making it harder to breath. I would say it is a half chance but I cant see bobby so I cant really say anything. But make sure he is getting the proper water, food and care also if he stops eating take him down to the vet. I hopes he gets better.

  2. With the proper meds, diet and restriction of exercise he may be with you longer than you may think. My old dog has been at that stage for a year and a half.Yahoo has a group, canine chf which is good, look at the info on it.

  3. You really need to ask your vet that question but usually the prognosis is not good...

  4. Ask another vet.

  5. It sounds like congestive heart failure.  As the heart muscle weakens it enlarges.  It is no longer able to keep the lungs clear of fluid, so the person or dog coughs up fluid frequently.  The situation can be managed, though!  Lasix (furosamide) is given to move the water on through and prevent water retention.  Sometimes another heart med is given to strengthen the force of the pumps.   Make sure the only water he has access to is distilled water - no sodium.  And check with the vet the sodium content of his food.  Don't let him gain weight from extra treats - that is extra work for the heart!  I had an Aussie for 2 years after the diagnosis.  He was kept comfortably managed and did well.  Hopefully your baby will also.
