Does my friend need a current passport to visit Ireland?

My friend is English, but her passport is out of date, will she be able to visit Dublin, or must she wait untill she gets her passport renewed?

Most airlines going from UK to Ireland will accept another form of photo id , check with the airline first

Im sure she does. Phone and ask. For Ireland perhaps an alternative form of ID will suffice seeing she`s  a UK citizen. If you look on Ryanair website it tells you there I think.

Aer Lingus and Ryanair operate the following policy:

For British and Irish citizens who are travelling on flights to/from the United Kingdom to/from the Republic of Ireland (Common Travel Area), a valid driving licence with photo is acceptable photo ID.

Aer Lingus will also accept a valid student card or work ID, once it has your picture on it.

(However some airlines only except valid passports, so if she's travelling with another airline check their website for ID requirements.)

not if she travels by ferry  --but she'll need some other forms of ID to get back into Britain .

There's still officially a "common travel area" between Britain and Ireland - meaning that passport control up until now don't exist.

The British are ending the Common Travel Area next year (2009) however and are imposing passport controls  on anyone entering Britain from the whole island of Ireland -including the North.

Airlines do prefer you to have a passport, best to check with them first, if she does need one urgently she will need to make an appointment at the nearest passport office, you cannot just turn up on spec.

They wont let you on a plane but if you get the Ulysses Irish ferry then you dont need a passport

If she is flying it is photo graphic ID she needs for the airline so any government ID will do the new driving licence is one type I have used. Have a lovely trip.

The correct answer is that she needs a passport OR a FULL (not provisional) UK photo driving license.  Both EasyJet and Ryanair will accept a UK photo license for Ireland.

Just follow what Andy E says. All that diatribe about really needing one, foreign country etc etc is wrong. Photo ID is necessary - a passport is useful but other form of ID is OK.

If you travel with Ryanair I heard she can take her drivers licence and its suffice. Double check that though

Ah, yes. You need a passport to fly anywhere these days, and I wouldn't advise taking the boat at the moment, the weather is very unreliable.

Yeah she'll need to go to Peterborough in Cambridgeshire to the passport office where they will knock her one out in a few hours. Costs about £100.00

due to new passport rules, it can take up to 6 weeks to get a passport, due to people now needing an interview - the few hours option at a main passport office is being fased out.. however, most airlines and ferry companies will accept a form of photgraphic id, if you are travelling from england to northern ireland, as it is classed as being part of the same country. (I've been researching this myself in the last few days as hubby who hasn't got a passport needs to go to Larne.

If in doubt phone the company which your friend will be travelling with and ask if a passport is needed, i had to and was told the info i have put above about a valid form of photographic id.
