Question:

Does my husband and my credit reports have to be linked?

I recently married. My husband has an excellent credit report and has managed to get a great rate on a fantastic mortgage. I, on the other hand, have a very bad credit report - as a student I did some silly spending and managed to gather some CCJ's (about three years ago). I share the same surname as my husband and the same address but no financial bank accounts. Will my poor credit reflect badly on his? Thanks

  1. Unfortnately yes.  However as long as you have been paying your bills on time and keep doing so, the bad stuff will "fall off" your credit report after 7 years.

  2. No. your marriage has no baring on your husbands credit. that is a huge common misconception "we become 1, so does our credit"....wrong.

You have seperate SS numbers and seperate credit reports, married or not.

The only time one spouse's credit will effect the other is if they apply for something together.

When in doubt, google. You can find all the myths and facts about marriage and credit.

  3. It is often the address that carries the bad rating but as you are now married with a different name then the credit report Will be under the new surname and probably will not be a problem. If at some time you and your husband apply for credit and are refused then you can find out the reason for the refusal. This will cost under £5 but is well worth it. If you apply for credit and refused do not apply again until it is sorted because every credit check and every refusal is logged and increases your bad points score.

  4. Yes I'm sorry but it will. They are all linked by address.

  5. Yes, I am afraid it will.

They base it on name and address. And with you both residing at the same place....etc.

But that said, some mortgage lenders can see beyond such things, and maybe just lend in your husband's name.

    Good luck.

    xx

  6. Yes

credit rating is based, among other things, on your address and who else lives there.

  7. Marriage is a package deal--the good and the bad.
