So here is the story. Me and my friends are planning to go camping during the summer. The problem is that my car will be in use by my parents. Therefore my friends has offered us to lend his car which is uninsured because he rarely drives it. What i am wondering is if there is anyway that my insurance will cover this car and if not is there some kind of temporary insurance that i can buy that will? We cannot rent the car because you have to be over 25 to rent a car in Ontario. Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

  1. No. The owner of the car must take out insurance to cover the vehicle. Have your friend contact an insurance company and see about getting temporary coverage.

  2. You'll have to read your policy as to the definition of a "covered auto".  Typically, vehicles available for your regular use are not subject to coverage, but you offer a somewhat unique situation if this is a one time use.  The best option is to call the claims office for your company (have your agent get you the number) and speak to a claim manager in personal auto claims.  Ask them the question.  If they say "yes" write down their name and when you spoke to them.
