Does my provisional license turn into a real license when I'm 18 or older?

Or do I have to go get my "Provisional License" replaced by a "Drivers License"?

It says it expires in 2015... So I'm not sure what to do.

Extra info:

I've had my Provisional License for over one year, and I'm almost 19.

  1. Your provisional license allows you to be on the road to be able to learn to drive.  There are limitations - you must be accompanied in the car by a adult who is older than 21 years of age who has their own full license, you cannot drive a car by yourself on the provisional license.

Only when you have passed your driver's license test will you be one a full class c driver's license.

  2. Yes you need to go to the DMV and have them give you a non-provisional/normal license. If you get pulled over, some cops will give you trouble for still having your provisional, and may ignore the fact that you are of legal age to have the normal license.

Though when I was younger I got pulled over at 1am with my provisional, at age 18 I think. But he didn't say anything to me about it.

Best bet would be to just go get your new one.

  3. Depends where you live.  I know in California, the licenses say "provisional until ___", and after that date passes it becomes a regular license.
