At the bottom is a link to the router I have. It came with two cords, one plugs into my modem and the other plugs into the back of my desktop computer. I use it to connect to the internet to my laptop. I was wondering if one of those cords is a Ethernet cable to plug into a phone jack to get internet at my dads house, He has nothing I can connect to ( using WiFi on my laptop). Please Help

  1. An eithernet cable CANNOT PLUG into a phone jack.  An eithernet cable plugs into an eithernet jack that is specifically for high speed internet.  If

your dad does not have DSL or a cable modem  you will not get high speed internet.  If you have a

dial up modem, you can get dial up access to your internet service provider.  If you have

AT&T Yahoo DSL you can do it for free.  If you have a cable modem, you probably have to pay a small fee for what they call Remote Dial Access.

You would need, however, a DIAL UP MODEM and a PHONE CORD not an eithernet to do that.

Moreover, it would be at dial up speeds such as

43kbps, the actual speed you usually get on a 56kbps modem, far less than the 768kbps or

1536kbps (about 1.5Mbps) you get with DSL.  If

you have a cable modem you probably get 3Mbps to 8Mbps service, possibley upto 14Mbps

with some of the expensive cable modem services.

  2. An ethernet cable will not even fit into a phone jack. The plugs are not the same size, even though they may look almost the same.

  3. Ok, the phone line is a small square transparent connector and connects to the back of the router. The ethernet cable is the the same but wider and looks like the below. It goes between router and PC.

  4. you cannot plug a ethernet cable into a phone jack, you cannot get internet via the phone jack without using a dial up connection.

The only way you can use the router from target is if your dad already has internet at his house(something other than dial up), otherwise a wireless router is useless without an internet connection already in place.

  5. I am not certain, but i think that the two cords are a regular telephone cord, and an ethernet cord. If you dad does not get any internet service, then the router will not do much. There is always a low-speed connection to the internet offered through dial up. If his house is in Michigan, then there is a service called dialinfree, otherwise, there is Netzero free, not the fastest, but they offer a connection to the internet for up to 10 hours a month. There are also sites online that list providers of dial up for little or no price to you (usually listed in separate categories). I would list one, but i have dial up and am in the middle of a download. I hope this helps.
