  1. Depending on your driving habits you need to start looking into regular maintenance between 12 to 18 thousand miles..

  2. cars dont need tune ups every 3000 miles and they dont need oil changes every 3000 miles

tune up is around 30,000 miles or every 2 years (no one does this)

    oil is every 5,000 miles

and your friend saying new cars dont need tune ups, can you just slap him in the back of the head and call him an idiot for me? thanks (unless he was talking about cars with that low mileage)

  3. The term "tune-up" is outdated.  It refers to the days before the engines in modern vehicles were computer controlled and many items such as the distributor's points and condenser, the cap and rotor for example had to be either checked or replaced.  Those items no longer exist.  The timing had to be manually checked and set as well but that is handled today by the engine computer(s).  Even the spark plugs had to be regapped or replaced frequently but with today's platinum and iridium plugs, their range had been greatly extended.

The oil change frequency recommendation is still every 3000 miles by some manufacturers though.

  4. Your car shouldn't need a "tune up" for a while check your owners manual.  It may need an oil and filter change every 3000 miles or so.  But some newer cars don't even need that if they have synthetic oil.  Your owners manual will tell you about it.
