I am trying to build a piece of furniture and am having trouble finding any wood other than oak that is readily accessible. Any other suggestions?

  1. Oak takes stain great. I'm not sure what you are building or what tools you have but oak is extremely hard. Poplar is a great wood to work with and stains well also. Oak splits easily and most fasteners will need to be predrilled, so does poplar but not as bad. Make sure you clean any glue up before it dries or the stain won't work there.

  2. sure, oak will take a stain nicely.
