I want to do the right thing and be a bigger part of the solution by actually working in the alt-energy sector, but circumstances make it hard for me to go back to school to make the jump. Any advice???

  1. yes you need a degree, unless u want to be a glorified garbage man

  2. I think getting a degree in Environmental Science will pay for it's self with a very high paying job. Student loans?

  3. Since green careers are booming today more than they ever have, I think you'd be surprised at how many people involved in the industry actually have a degree in environmental studies.  It would surely help you get involved, but my inclination is to say that it's not completely necessary.  Any sort of degree would help, related to environmentalism or not.  But, degree or no degree, I think one of the most important qualifiers for a job in this field is experience.  Fortunately, there are many green businesses or organizations who offer all kinds of internships.  Keep in mind, many of these internships are often unpaid, so you may need another job to supplement a lack of income for a while- but these internships often lead to paid positions within the company/org.  If not, you have experience under your belt that may help you launch your career with another group, or start one yourself!

Hope this helps, best of luck!
