Originally a threshold was a board that held the threshed grain in place as a floor covering.  New wives are carried over the threshold, but everyone can do as they please!

I just walk in, I don't even think about it. Only time I did was when I got married, and I was carried over it.

I've done both.  Usually I step over it but if I have on the wrong shoes or I'm losing my footing I might step on it.
