  1. The desert around it is as dry as can be, little pockets of vegetation here and there - like Ein Gedi

Most of the southern part is dried up water is used by the dead sea factory.

There are plans by the Jordanians to dig a canal from the red sea  to the dead sea.

There were plans by Israel called The Seas Canal (part was even dug) to connect the Med sea and the Dead sea, but turned out to be too expensive.

Most of what you see here is dry today

  2. no "fresh" water in the dead sea, it is very salty; never jump in head first.

there are springs of fresh water near ein-gedi. there are near by also some pools that are not salty as the sea water, but contains a lot of sulfuric compounds.

  3. maybe in the Jordanian side !

  4. Historically, there was always freshwater flowing into the Dead Sea in the past. That was good as it kept the level of water constant. The problem is that now a  " . . . lack of freshwater entering the Dead Sea combined with mineral extraction on its south shores has led to about a one meter drop in water of the Dead Sea per year."

  5. No, I haven't heard that. But I have heard that the desert is blooming.

  6. No fresh water in it--any fresh water that feeds it quickly gets mixed with the rest of the water. In fact, the Dead Sea is shrinking, so it's getting  more concentrated, and less fresh water is getting to it.

  7. I'm not sure about the dead sea having fresh water but one thing that is certain is that there are freshwater streams trickling to the dead sea.
