  1. All the above answers are right on the money.  It works on the eyes, nose and mouth to inflame the glands.

  2. Pepper spray is an inflammatory. It causes immediate closing of the eyes, difficulty breathing, runny nose, and coughing. The duration of its effects depend on the strength of the spray but the average full effect lasts around thirty to forty-five minutes, with diminished effects lasting for hours.

  3. Yes.  The OC Spray is meant to stop a suspect from resisting.  The spray itself is a liquid similar to Texas Pete hot sauce.  If it is properly deployed the Officer will spray a copious amount in the offenders face around the eye brows and nose.  If the offender opens his/her eyes then the spray will run into the eyes.  Even if the eyes aren't opened some will get in the suspects airway when it is inhaled.  Also, it is going to be really hard to fight the Police if you keep your eyes closed.

    I'm an OC Instructor.

  4. You can close your eyes, but there is still a little bit of tear gland exposed at all times and thats where the OC does its best work.

  5. Yes it will still work because if the eyes are closed the spray will keep them closed. Reason, when the subject opens their eyes the oc spray will burn forcing them to keep their eyes closed. The only way I can explain oc spray or tell you what it's like. It would be the same as bobbing for fries in the deep fryer at Mc Donals.
