Question:

Does personal car insurance not cover you if you have a business sign on your car?

I was told that if you have an accident your car won't be covered if you are advertising your business on it. Also, what if a client or family member has one on their car, even if they don't own or work for the business?

  1. You certainly have to tell your insurance agent if you use your vehicle for business, whether it has signs on it or not.

You could use magnetic signs which can be removed instantly or transferred to another vehicle (as long as not plastic, fiberglass or aluminum).  I have used vinyl covered flexible magnetics for numbers/stickers on a road racing track @ 100+ mph (they don't blow off), and the same magnetic signs for 2 different service trucks since 1995.

  2. Some insurance companies will not insure business signs such as pizza delivery, or other delivery vehicles, due to the high exposure and high miles.  A simple business such as landscaping or appliance repair might be insured as a business or commercial class and will be covered.  Check with your insurance company (without giving your name) to see about getting the correct coverage.  Good luck.

You'll want to research this some more....

  3. That is not true. I have many stickers on my truck that advertise businesses, and it will still be covered. The insurance is concerned with how you drive your vehicle. If you use it commercially as in driving it to make sales calls or deliver products then you must tell the insurance company, but if I have a bumper sticker that advertizes my company, the insurance company must cover me in the event of an accident.
