Does petland use puppy mills?

im just wondering. im not getting a puppy, but everytime i go to petland to just play with the puppies or get my gerbils food or fluff, i always notice the poor little puppies in those tanks with a wired bottom so the pee and p**p does through the squares. i think its mean, they should all be together in a big, big, big play pen with beds and actual water bowls and not those rabbit water bottles they use. its just silly. they have a sign thing at my petland saying why you should buy a petland puppy, and like one of the reasons is that they dont use "puppy mills" and that they inspect where they get their puppies and they get some at local breeders.i dont believe this. i always hear that they do use puppy mills. but petland says they dont. what do you think?

  1. yes they do its a petstore!

  2. Yes, they do.  Of course they won't admit to it, but they do.

However, in all fairness, it's easier and more sanitary to keep puppies clean on the wire grates, and water bottles stay clean longer than water dishes.  Also, if you put all the puppies together, they'll share diseases.  Everyone would love to see puppies playing in a big cushy playpen, but it's just not practical or hygenic.

  3. They buy from what is called a 'batcher' or a class B breeder - that person acts as the middle man between people who have puppies or puppy farms or commercial breeders. So they could say they don't buy from puppy mills - but the guy they do buy from does.

some of their stock also does come directly from puppy mills in MO and the Amish in Penn - have started quite the production of puppies for sale.

  4. lol i know! i used to always go in there to play with thiem! lol

But yeah, they get them from puppymills. Most/All pet stores do, but they would never admit it.

There was a video on there of a pet store in Hollywood where like, Paris Hilton and all those people shop for their pets. The store told them they don't buy from puppymills, and that none of their dogs were sick. Someone caught the manager on tape, telling the employees to say that no matter what. All their dogs were from puppymills, and they had parvo, and anything else you could think of. And if a shopper said 'hey, this puppy is sick', the employee is told to say 'oh it just has a little cold' or even 'the sniffles' just to make it sound cuter. =_=

But yeah, so most places do use puppymills. And the little water bottles they give them are actually cleaner than the bowls. Because if the puppy spills the bowl, it'll get mixed in with all the pee and stuff down under the grates, then they'll try to drink it, and either get their nose stuck or get sick from drinking the water. And the grates are just so they dont roll around in it and then get it on people that want to play with them. lol. And its an easy clean up. Just sweep it out of the bottom =)

And I dont think the puppies are together because they could share sickness maybe? I dont know. I've seen puppies from puppymills together in cages, but usually only like 2. But it was probably because they were from the same litter, but im not for sure.

Some of them MAY be from local breeders, but I doubt it. There's petlands all over the place, some nowhere near breeders.

WAIT WTF?!?! I just reread what you said :

"and like one of the reasons is that they dont use "puppy mills" and that they inspect where they get their puppies and they get some at local breeders"

If they're only getting SOME from local breeders, where are they getting the rest??!?!! A dumpster?!?! See? You just caught them in their own lie. If only some come from breeders, then the rest are from.. ? Puppymills. =__=

All places say that they dont use puppymills. But most do. It's so sad. =( I think I want to be a breeder, just so I can have the cleanest place around and turn around everything =__=

  5. yea really i say we all should go on a strike and don't buy items withe dogs and cats in the store. go to petsmart or petco. becuase when you buy items for your pet your giving the petstore money to buy from the puppy supplyers.

I SAY GO ON STRIKE AND DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM PETLAND OR PET STORES THAT SUPPLY DOGS AND CATS

  6. You can bet they are not getting them from reputable breeders.

Places like petland are only interested in making a profit.  If not from puppymills, they likely get them from backyard breeders who don't care who will eventually obtain one of their puppies, that was bred only with size and money as motivation.

  7. Petland uses puppy mills exclusively.  If they advertised that their puppies came from puppy mills, no one would shop there.

As a matter of fact, you should not be buying ANYTHING from a store that sells dogs.  Giving them money, even if it is for gerbil food, sends them the message that you are ok with their sales practices (selling dogs for profit).  There has to be a petstore near by that doesn't sell dogs where you can buy your gerbil supplies.

  8. They are some of the worst. Of course they wouldn't admit they get their puppies from puppy mills, I mean if people knew, that would really hurt their business.

  9. i think they would say anything to sell a puppy.

  10. When pet stores say they use local breeders, that generally means a local puppy mill or BYB. Reputable breeders don't sell to pet stores as they want to know who buys their pups.

Edited to add: If you can, buy your gerbil food and fluff at a pet supply store that does not sell puppies so that way you won't be supporting BYB's and puppy mills every time you buy anything at a pet store.
