I have a small acoustic guitar and i can't do anything with it but i'm wishing, with a new cool electric guitar i'll have more incentive to practice. So does physique matter when buying a guitar? also any other buying tips would be appreciated thanx

  1. In the seventies there was an awesome guitar player called leslie West, he played with a band called mountain, he was a big dude and he played a Les Paul junior, you'll see him at about 45 seconds into this youtube

in about 1995 he did a spot with Van halen...he's that highly rated as a guitar player.  a lot of new players don't know him.  think he was definetly one of the best players of that era, as do many other rock guitarists that can discriminate.    remember this 30 years ago.  He only used 3 fingers on his left hand but later regretted it.

You might also like to find a local guitarmaker to talk to, tell them that you're just starting out and if they are friendly enough they might give you a few tips to reassure you what to look for.

I recommend you go to a local library and check out books on how guitars are made, get informed and you'll feel pretty ok about it.  Google the guitar making youtubes, you might find it interesting.

when you get a guitar get one that is wide across the fretboard, check it close to the nut.  You'll notice the Fenders and copies will be quite tight to play.  I grew up playing Gibsons because I like a lot of chords.

Buy something that feels comfortable in your hands.

i had to teach a guy with massive hands about ten years back, I had to throw the ruile book out of the window.  You may need to pay close attention to the way you hold your left hand. When I play mandolin and other smaller instruments, I tilt my hand downwards and don't play horizontally, otherwise my fingers are too wide on those instruments.

Check out this mando player and look at the size difference between him and the mando, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdkBUaWv7...   it's an issue that everyone faces with the mandolin.
