  1. salt acually melts ice. the problem with it is that it also kills the plants and trees alone the roadside. i live in the mountains at around 7200 feet. up here they use little lava rocks called ciders. they just stick the the ice, and give you something to drive on.

  2. Salt is used to decrease the temp. at which water freezes "Super Freezing"  so the roads dont have ice on them

  3. Melts the ice--that is it--it is a chemical--not really a salt---wipe your shoes before going in the house--it can stain carpets--floor tiles---and kill pets.

  4. No.   It just melts ice so your tires can reach the pavement and have friction/traction.    It does nothing to increase the friction over what you could have in good conditions.

  5. not just salt but--rock salt--.   rock salt will melt most ice and snow thereby giving u traction on the road.   if you have a sidewalk that is icy -rock salt will melt it.

  6. It may, but i think the intent is to change the melting point.

Salt water has a lower melting point.  So, instead of ice you have water.  Water is safer to drive on.
