  1. iceman-  At this time there is no preventive shot or immunization for poison ivy or poison oak or poison sumac - all of which are allergic reactions to the sap (urushiol) of the plant.  There is no bacteria or virus involved.  Products touted to prevent dermatitis through desensitization were marketed for several decades. Both oral and injectable products containing urushiol were administered, but none were found to be effective and safe. Oral products caused anal itching  and generalized itching. While some patients did appear to attain a degree of hyposensitization, the effect waned after 6–10 months, with the patient then returning to full sensitivity. Because of standardization difficulties, the FDA forced these products off the market in 1993
